Colorado Trail – Day 14

August 18, 2013

Miles Hiked: 15.4
Total Miles: 158
Segments: 9, 10

Woke up around 6:45am to some back pain and a damp sleeping bag but otherwise alright… surprisingly. I packed everything up and went to the nearby gas station. Bought 2 sausage egg and cheese biscuits, a Red Bull, and a bottle of water. After eating and drinking I went back to the highway to try to hitchhike again back to the trail. Still no luck. So I just started walking, hoping I wouldn’t have to hike all 9 miles along the highway. I had probably walked 2 miles when a guy who works at the Leadville hostel picked me up. I think his name was Harold. They call him Crazy. I was finally back on the trail! I made decent time for a while because the trail was fairly flat. I eventually got to some steep hiking. After going over a very steep ridge, I thought that was the main ridge. But a few miles later I started going uphill again, steeply. After studying the data book I realized I was actually 2 miles behind where I thought was. I was pissed and demoralized. I struggled uphill. The downhill hike was extremely steep and frustrating. I finally finished the segment and pushed 1.8 miles into the next segment to get a jump start on tomorrow and reach a decent camp area.
